Early onslaught by Netherlands, nearly ends with a try but stripped by Switzerland on their line. But nearly ends with an inspired try set up by Te Campbell. Unfortunately, his kick forward brushed the whitewash, giving Switzerland a lineout in their own 22.
Subsequently the lineout was stolen, couple of phases later, found Oliva Sialau hit a phenomenal line to breeze through the defence and to dot down under the posts. His first international try. Conversion made, on what turned up to be a tough day from the kicking tee. 7-0 after 3 mins.
Netherlands were full of attacking intent to put on a display for the home crowd. After 8 minutes, Chris Raymond managed to force himself over from close range, after a consistent spell of pressure, where it looked like every Dutch player got a touch of the ball.
Mistakes from the restart gave the Netherlands chance to put themselves back into the Swiss half. Some hard lines, managed to win penalty advantage. When the Netherlands went for the air in an attempt to cross field kick for Tim De Jong to nearly score, try of the tournament but couldn’t quite reel it into his grasp.
The ball was kicked for a 5m lineout from the returning penalty, the lineout maul was nearly shoved over but dogged Swiss defence stopped it on the line. However, ill discipline crept in again and they gave away a penalty again at the breakdown. The TMO intervened though and showed the Maul was stopped illegally by Thomas McCarthy, the dogged defence was undo and penalty try awarded. Yellow card to Thomas McCarthy too.
19-0 Netherlands after 13 mins
A scrum on the Swiss 22 for Switzerland was stolen by the Netherlands, allowing Boris Hadinegoro to snipe round the scrum, eventually stopped but a lovely offload to the oncoming Spike Salman to run himself over the line for the 4th Netherlands try and a guaranteed bonus point. The wayward day off the tee continued. 24 – 0 to Netherlands after 17 mins.
Another dominant Dutch scrum managed to win possession back on the Swiss 22, Chris Raymond started to eat up the metres before another couple of phases, found Oliva Sialau hit another sublime line to go under the posts. The extras were added this time though from in front the posts. Try was disallowed just before the restart due to a knock on at the scrum but offside allowed the Netherlands to have the penalty. Nudged out again for a 5m lineout. Lineout maul executed as planned, finding Chris Raymond at the back of the maul, just to guide it over the try line.
Unfortunately, this conversion went wayward again, torrid day off the tee so far. Giving the Dutch a 29-0 lead after 23 minutes.
Netherlands were definitely on a mission from the restart and nearly managed to get themselves clear again. Managing to find themselves with a 5 m lineout again, the maul didn’t quite make the distance but the speed of ball from Boris Hadinegoro allowed Vikas Meijer to dominate himself over the line in the corner. Tee was passed to David Weersma but he couldn’t find the extras either.
Switzerland finally found themselves with the ball in attacking play on the 28th minute and looked dangerous. Nearly managing the same attempt as the cross field kick for Tim De Jong earlier in the game. Sadly, they kept trying to force the issue, and ended in a handling error.
Johnatan Dallet got a team yellow on 32nd minute, after a collection of discipline penalties. Netherlands opted for the lineout again, manage to get a few phases to under the posts. But great Swiss defence held them back. Hadinegoro managed to use that speed at the breakdown t get the ball out to Vikas Meijer then out wide for Te Campbell to dive down in the corner. Weersma managed to add the extras from probably the hardest kick of the day.
Swiss win a scrum from the restart on the Dutch 10m line. Netherlands win the ball back, a sublime kick over the top bobbles around and finally ends up in the arms of Boris Hadinegoro who does not hesitate to dive over the line with it. Hadinegoro Debut try on Debut! The Conversion rockets back off the upright this time. Definitely a day to forget from the tee for the Dutch.
The half ends with Netherlands 46-0 to the good!
After the restart, the Netherlands went to the air to gain territory. After what would have been a beautiful spiral return by Cyril Lin was plucked from the air before crossing the whitewash. Netherlands managed to draw a defender, to allow Boris Hadinegoro through in the corner after a filthy step. The torrid time from the tee continued.
The Dutch scrum managed to overturn the ball near the halfway line. Quickly distributed out the back, finding Te Campbell just charging through the line, with a couple of fend offs. Diving over in the corner put Netherlands 56-0 afterwards. The kicking duties were still missing and no extras added. 10 tries in after 48 minutes and no sign of stopping.
53rd minute, the Mees Van Oord dived over in the corner again after banging on the door under the posts, to no avail. Ball was spun out widely to allow the Dutch score out wide. The kicking percentage was taking another battering after another miss.
The Swiss finally had a sustained purple patch in attack and found themselves camped in the Dutch half, but the desperation to remove the 0 from the board, lead to errors gifting the Netherlands chance to relieve the pressure at the times they needed.
The Dutch put a stop to that pressure in the 70th minute when they dotted down again in the corner. After a driving lineout maul from the Swiss 10m to their 22 set the perfect platform for it to be spun wide through the hands. Back inside for a couple of phases it opened up the short side to be exploited out wide. Kicking duties changed again but to no avail.
A final try was added after space opened up again in the Swiss defence, allowing David Weersma to dive down closer to the posts. Giving the kick a chance of going over today.
Another excruitating day at the office for Switzerland, a very tough debut season in the REC. But positives to take away for a country with only 5000 players available in the player pool currently. The Netherlands showed their class and really benefited from the classy display from Boris Hadinegoro on debut, a well deserved man of the match performance and an exciting future ahead! Next step is a home tie against Germany for the Dutch. And a tough trip to Belgium for the Swiss!
