Premiership Glory in Sight?

Premiership Glory in Sight?
As the Gallagher Premiership season reaches its dramatic conclusion, few teams have captured the imagination like the Bristol Bears. A blend of thrilling attack, tenacious spirit, and standout individual performances has seen Pat Lam’s side roar back into playoff contention and perhaps even into the title conversation. It’s looking likely to include Bath, Leicester Tigers, Sale Sharks and Bristol Bears in the final 4, but I'm always one to appreciate a twist in the tale!
Bears vs Quins: A Final Push for the Playoffs
In what promises to be a season-defining clash, Bristol host Harlequins at Ashton Gate. Both teams are chasing a top-four finish, but it’s the Bears who arrive with the momentum, having battered Quins 53–28 in their previous meeting at The Stoop.
The stakes? Win, and Bristol could book a semi-final place. Lose, and the dream might be over. With Harlequins missing Danny Care and Marcus Smith from their matchday squad and fielding young guns like Jamie Benson, and Bristol boasting electric form at home, this fixture is set to be the one to watch at the end of the season.
Key Players Fueling Bristol's Charge
Bristol's resurgence has been driven by a core group of players who’ve not only led from the front but produced moments of genuine brilliance throughout the campaign. Remember, no Ellis Genge at Ashton Gate, which I'm personally disappointed about, the Baby Rhino has been excelling all season long!
Gabriel Ibitoye – Winger
Arguably the Bears’ breakout star, Ibitoye is second in the Premiership try-scoring chart with 11 tries. His blistering pace and finishing power were never more evident than in his nine-minute hat-trick against Exeter.
Kalaveti Ravouvou – Winger
The Fijian powerhouse has delivered both flair and ferocity in the midfield. Notably, his two-try performance against Leicester backed by strong carries and dominant defence, which earned him a Player of the Month nomination in December. Murley vs Ravouvou will be the match up of the weekend!
Can Bristol Win the Premiership?
Mathematically, yes, 61% to qualify into the final 4, according to the Premiership Social Media Pages. Spiritually, absolutely. But the path won’t be easy. The Bears likely need a win over Harlequins to sneak into the top four, then face a knockout semi-final, possibly away, followed by a Twickenham final. Don't ask me the percentage for winning the entire Premiership, ask me on 14th June 2025!
Their attack is among the league’s most potent, but defensive discipline and playoff composure will be tested. Still, in a season marked by unpredictability, Bristol’s blend of experience and X-factor gives them a real shot at glory.
A moment for Marcus?
I know Marcus isn't in the matchday squad, but I was personally excited to see him play against a tough back line in Bristol! I’ve had the pleasure of watching March Smith for England at Twickenham numerous times this season and he’s an enigma that continues to divide opinion. However, It’s a rest weekend on the final weekend of Gallagher Premiership for the Flamboyant British and Irish Lion.
Marcus Smith’s 2024 - 25 season with Harlequins has been a mix of standout performances and testing challenges. At his best, Smith remains one of the Premiership’s most electric play makers. He showcased this in Harlequins’ 40- 21 win over Gloucester, where he orchestrated attacks with precision and facilitated a hat-trick for Cadan Murley. Earlier in the campaign, his 18-point haul against Newcastle Falcons helped snap a losing streak and highlighted his ability to influence games both with ball in hand and from the tee.
However, Smith’s season has also faced scrutiny. Harlequins’ heavy European defeat to Leinster raised questions about the team’s structure and his game management in high-pressure environments. His England duties added complexity, with a mixed reception to his performances at full-back, a position that doesn’t fully utilize his skill set. Despite speculation about a positional switch within Harlequins due to squad injuries, Smith’s commitment to adaptability and team needs has been clear.
Off the field, Smith has shown maturity and growth, notably improving his kicking with help from legends like Jonny Wilkinson and Leigh Halfpenny. Most significantly, he has reaffirmed his commitment to Harlequins by signing a new deal through to 2028, reinforcing his long-term ambition to lead the club forward. With the business end of the Premiership looming, Smith's leadership and flair will be essential if Harlequins are to secure a playoff spot and challenge for silverware.
Final Word
From a mid-season wobble to a surging playoff push, Bristol Bears have become one of the stories of the Premiership season. If their stars continue to shine and if Ashton Gate becomes a fortress once more few would bet against them roaring all the way to Twickenham. Basically a quarter final for the end of season play offs! Be sure to grab your popcorn and enjoy the spectacle!
